Norfolk Broads - Local Knowledge

Postby kgough » Tue Jun 15, 2010 8:40 am

Hi Folks

I've got a trip coming up to the Broads and I wonder if someone with local knowledge could recommend places to stop or even an itinerary ....Does anyone know the area round Hickling Broad/Barton Broad?

regards

Can't offer local knowledge, but we've day-sailed from Hickling with our Wayfarer, and previously on traditional broads day-boats and cruisers - sailing, of course. Are you planning to cruise or day-sail, boat or land camp (or something more civilised?). Launch from Wispering reeds boatyard (for a moderate fee) or from the Hickling parish slip by prior arrangement and £5. You need a broads permit, which can also be purchased from Wispering reeds boatyard

Public mooring at various places along the rivers, and parish Staithes where you may have to pay a small charge.

I sailed on Barton Broad as a teenager. I have been back since but not recently. There is good sailing on the broad itself, but the river Ant required a lot of patience - trees. Last time I was there, some tree cutbacking had helped.
In short, not great for a Wayfarer.
If you have the choice - go to the Thurne;
Hickling Broad, Horsey Mere, Martham Broad
Then head for the Bure, Acle Bridge, Ranworth Broad, South Walsham.

Hope that helps.

PS don't forget you will need a license.

Keith,

Dont know where you are travelling from but best suggestion, presuming you wont have a chase car, is to put in at Hickling and spend at least a day above Potter Bridge. Depending on the wind direction you may get up to Horsey Mere and the windpump (about 1/2 a mile from the sea at this point).

If you are here for 3 or 4 days, shoot both bridges at Potter Heigham and the Broads open up for you.

As Bob has said dont bother with Barton unless you have an engine to get you from Ludham Bridge to Barton.

There are plenty of areas to visit without going through Ludham Bridge. Malthouse broad is picturesque but without an engine can be a bit of a mare getting onto and off of.

If you need any other tips/help please feel free to PM me for my phone numbers.

Hi Folks

Just back from 4 days sailing. We hired a traditional broad yacht - fantastic. No engine, no electricity, no bother. Great fun and a fantastic time had by all - even dodging the motor cruisers was good fun.
