Dinghy Show 'Virtual Regatta'

Written by Steve Collins | 15 January 2012

In 2012 the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, to be held over the weekend of 3rd & 4th March, will have an added attraction in the form of a virtual regatta! The regatta, powered by the inshore sailboat racing and training game SailX.com, will be open to all and will be run over seven weeks in the lead up to the event, culminating with Finals at the dinghy show on the Volvo Main Stage!

Of course a computer game could never test all of the myriad of skills involved in sailboat racing, but as a high-performance rules and strategy-based racing game, SailX does offer an interesting insight into who really has the best understanding of these fascinating and vital areas of our sport. On top of this, given the importance of these mental aspects, SailX also provides sailors with a great platform to shout about what makes the sport so special and to engage new people in sailing’s fascinating gameplay.

In an exciting development, the famous Endeavour Trophy will also be associated with this event, with the winning Class being awarded the “2012 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show Championship Trophy” and the winning individual being awarded with the “2012 Virtual Endeavour Trophy”. The Endeavour Trophy, a fine silver replica of the J Class Endeavour donated by Beecher Moore in 1934 which has been awarded to the “Champion of Champions” of the British dinghy world almost every year since then, will also be on display at the show. Interestingly the virtual nature of this regatta will help the Endeavour Championship to broaden its reach beyond the thirty or so Classes which can physically be accommodated in the real-world event and it will give all Classes an equal chance to present the quality and depth of sailing talent in their fleets.

But most importantly perhaps, SailX will help every sailor competing in this regatta to emerge out the far side of the competition ‘hot’ and more ready to race than they have ever been after the cold of British winter! Let the competition begin!

Liam McGrath, UKWA Chairman comments: "we are keen to support the RYA, but it is a matter for individuals whether they complete it and add their details to a database for subsequent marketing etc."

18th International Wayfarer Rally in Järnavik, Sweden,

Written by Ralph roberts | 08 December 2011

Sunday the 29th  July  to Sunday 5th August 2012.

The Scandinavian Wayfarer Association (SWS) is pleased to invite you to Sweden – into waters surrounded by fjords – to the blue sea of Blekinge and its thousands of islands.
It is simply one of the best parts of Sweden.

 jarnavik tjaro
Above photo taken from the island of Tjärö (south) showing the fjord into Järnavik

We plan to sail to many different islands and places – sometimes to islands with a lunch restaurant, and to Karlshamn to visit an extraordinary fish-restaurant. Various social activities will be organised in the evening, including a grill evening etc. In the event of bad weather we plan a guided tour to the historic towns of Karlshamn and Karlskrona, as well as a visit to art galleries in other nearby towns.

Ex Commodore wins the Spirit of the Regatta Award

Written by Steve Collins | 13 July 2011

Former UKWA Commodore Ralph Roberts and Brandon McClintoch won the VDLR "Spirit" of the Regatta award at Dun Laoghaire for their wonderful endeavours in sailing Wayfarer 9885 Spree Lady all the way from Baltimore in West Cork to Dun Laoghaire in time to participate in the event.

Winning this award in an overall fleet of 410 entries was a terrific and very worthy achievement for these two intrepid dinghy sailors who had to deal with some very difficult weather and sea conditions along the way but they still arrived smiling and ever willing to help the rest of the fleet launch and recover their boats every day of the regatta.

Membership

Written by Sarah Burgess | 07 March 2009

Membership of the UKWA;

We are always delighted to welcome new members to the association. Wayfarer boat owners can join as Full (Boat owning Member). We have many non-boat owners who may join as an Associate Member.

Why should I become a member of UKWA, the association of Wayfarer owners?

We pride ourselves on being a very friendly association and are always delighted to welcome new members.

You don't have to own a Wayfarer to be a member, and many people choose to join while looking for a boat so that they can take advantage of membership, espcially our magazine and website, in the meantime.

The owner of a Wayfarer has the opportunity to join a large group of sociable and knowledgeable sailors who together know everything there is to know about this amazing dinghy.

Specifically you will receive the following direct benefits:

  • A copy of the 3 times per year A4 Wayfarer News, which contains articles about Racing, Cruising and Training and many tips to help you increase your enjoyment of the Wayfarer.
  • Excellent value insurance from Craftinsure tailored to the needs of Wayfarer owners.
  • The opportunity to participate in UKWA organised events around the country; racing, cruising and training.
  • Access to the Members Forum and members only section of our website.
  • The ability to buy branded merchandise at special prices; the Wayfarer Book, class clothing, and other goods.
  • Information on Boats for Sale and Wanted.
  • Wayfarer drawings
  • Measurement Certificates
  • Rental of boat tents.
  • Access to our extensive library of Cruising Logs.
  • A friendly welcome to the UKWA Stand at the Dinghy Show.

New membership applications received after 1 October will also cover the following year

Membership Fees are:
